Nobel Prizes are awarded every year in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Economics, and Peace. Nobel Prizes are awarded, based on the 1895 will of Alfred Nobel, to “those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind”. Initially there were only 5 categories, but later in 1968 the category of Economic Sciences was added. First Nobel Prize winner in India
Rabindranath Tagore is the the first Indian to receive Nobel Prize.
Though, Sir Ronald Ross and Rudyard Kipling received the Nobel prize before him, they were British Nationals. It should be noted here that Sir Ronald Ross was born in Almora (in the present day Uttarakand District), and Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay (the present Mumbai).
