Nobel Prizes are awarded every year in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Economics, and Peace. Nobel Prizes are awarded, based on the 1895 will of Alfred Nobel, to “those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind”. Initially there were only 5 categories, but later in 1968 the category of Economic Sciences was added. Nobel Prizes are widely regarded as the most prestigious award s available in the respective fields. Har Gobind Khorana*  Medicine 1968 For the interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis
C. V. Raman  Physics 1930 For his work on Scattering of light, and the effect named after him called Raman effect.
Rabindranath Tagore  Literature 1913 He is the first non-European as well as the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Rudyard Kipling*  Literature 1907 Born in Bombay, British India. He was a Short Story writer, poet, novelist and a journalist.
Ronald Ross*  Medicine 1902 For his work on Malaria.  He is the first British Nobel Laurete, and the First Nobel Laureate born outside of Europe

*– Born in India but another national or overseas citizen of Indian Origin or resident of India

First Nobel Prize winner in India 

Rabindranath Tagore is the the first Indian to receive Nobel Prize.

Though, Sir Ronald Ross and Rudyard Kipling received the Nobel prize before him, they were British Nationals. It should be noted here that Sir Ronald Ross was born in Almora (in the present day Uttarakand District), and Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay (the present Mumbai).
