RRB JE Exam Overview

The Railways Recruitment Board conducts the RRB JE Exam to recruit science and engineering backgrounds candidates to fill in the various technical posts in the Indian Railways.

The RRB JE Exam is conducted for the following posts:

  • Junior Engineer (JE)
  • Junior Engineer (IT)
  • Depot Material Superintendent (DMS)
  • Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant (CMA)

RRB JE Job Profile

There are five departments:

RRB JE Civil Work Profile

  • The candidate who will be selected as RRB JE Civil will work as a Supervisor in the Civil Engineering Department of Railways. He will be called as the Inspector of Works.
  • He is responsible for the construction and maintenance of Railway buildings.
  • He has to ensure that the track is maintained in the best quality to enable smooth, safe, and fast movement of trains.
  • He is responsible for the maintenance of bridges in the Railway Division.
  • He holds the inspection and maintenance of all track machines and also confirms that the machines are working efficiently and are in proper working condition.

RRB JE Electrical Job Profile

  • The candidate entitles to this job role has responsibilities like maintenance of several types of equipment used in the Railway Department.
  • He is responsible for the production and safeguarding of the Main Line EMUs (MEMUs), Electrical Locomotives, and Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs).
  • He ensures that the drive Wheels spin at a standard rate if the motion of wheels is too fast.
  • He handles the maintenance of overhead equipment (OHE) and substations which are involved in shifting of rolling stock.

  • The candidate entitles to this job role has responsibilities such as oversee the signaling installations of the stations, submission of proposals for revenue & work budget, and for periodic reviews.

RRB JE Mechanical Job Profile

  • This Profile includes manufacturing, maintenance (Division and Workshop), and operation of carriage, wagon, and locomotives.

RRB JE IT Work Profile

  • The Profile of JE (IT) includes handling IT-related matters of the Railways, procurement of IT hardware, software, and office equipment such as photocopier, fax machine, and much more.

RRB JE Salary

 

The in-hand salary of an RRB JE as per 7th Central Pay Commission is Rs 42,000/- (approx) per month plus allowances as admissible.

The various allowances that an RRB JE is entitled to are House Rent Allowance, Medical Allowance, Travel Allowance, Education Allowance etc.

  • Question papers for both CBTs shall be of Objective Multiple Choice Type. 
  • The questions paper will be in English and other languages such as Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odiya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
  • The shortlisting of 2nd Stage CBT will be based on the merit of the candidates in 1st Stage CBT. Shortlisting of candidates for 2nd Stage CBT shall be done at the rate of 15 times (may increase or decrease as per the requirement of Railway Administration).
  • There shall be negative marking for incorrect answers in both CBTs. 1/3rd of the marks allotted for each question shall be deducted for each wrong answer.
  • Minimum percentage of marks for eligibility in various categories: UR-40%, OBC-30%, SC-30%, ST -25%. This percentage of marks for eligibility may be relaxed by 2% for PwBD candidates, in case of shortage of PwBD candidates against vacancies reserved for them.
  • A virtual calculator will be made available on the Computer Monitor during 1st, 2nd Stage CBT

1st Stage CBT Syllabus

a. Mathematics :
Number systems, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM and HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar & Clock, Pipes & Cistern.

b. General Intelligence and Reasoning :
Analogies, Alphabetical and Number Series, Coding and Decoding, Mathematical operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagram, Data Interpretation and Sufficiency, Conclusions and Decision Making, Similarities and Differences, Analytical reasoning, Classification, Directions, Statement – Arguments and Assumptions etc.

c. General Awareness :
Knowledge of Current affairs, Indian geography, culture and history of India including freedom struggle, Indian Polity and constitution, Indian Economy, Environmental issues concerning India and the World, Sports, General scientific and technological developments etc.

d. General Science :
Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences (up to 10th Standard CBSE syllabus)

2nd Stage CBT Syllabus

a) General Awareness :
Knowledge of Current affairs, Indian geography, culture and history of India including freedom struggle, Indian Polity, and constitution, Indian Economy, Environmental issues concerning India and the World, Sports, General scientific and technological developments etc.

b) Physics and Chemistry: Up to 10th standard CBSE syllabus.

c) Basics of Computers and Applications:
Architecture of Computers; input and Output devices; Storage devices, Networking, Operating System like Windows, Unix, Linux; MS Office; Various data representation; Internet and Email; Websites & Web Browsers; Computer Virus.

d) Basics of Environment and Pollution Control:
Basics of Environment; Adverse effect of environmental pollution and control strategies; Air, water and Noise pollution, their effect and control; Waste Management, Global warming; Acid rain; Ozone depletion.

e) Technical Abilities: Different syllabus for different Engineering groups.

 

 

RRB JE Eligibility Criteria

 

Below are the eligibility criteria that a candidate should fulfill in order to be eligible for the RRB JE exam:

Nationality

  • Candidates who wish to be a part of the Indian Railway system should only be from:
    • India,
    • Bhutan or
    • From Nepal.
  • Tibetian migrants can also participate in the RRB JE selection process 2019, only if they comply with the following rules:
    • Who are Tibetan migrants and have settled in India before January 01, 1962 are eligible to apply and be selected.

Age Limit

You should know that your age limit should be between the maximum age limit and the minimum age limit as prescribed by RRB.

  • Minimum Age: 18 years
  • Maximum Age: 33 years
Upper Age Limit Relaxation for different categories
  • OBC: Maximum age is 36 years (relaxation of 3 years)
  • SC and ST: Maximum age is 38 years (relaxation of 5 years)
  • For Ex-Servicemen: Up to the age they served the country, an additional 3 years if they served for 6 more months after attestation.
  • For people with disabilities:
    • Unreserved Persons with Disabilities (PWD): 43 years (10 years of relaxation)
    • OBC PWD: 46 years (13 years of relaxation)
    • SC and ST: 48 years (15 years of relaxation)

Education Qualifications

Qualifications for a Junior Engineer (JE)

  • You should have a three-year diploma or degree in the field of Civil Engineering or B.Sc in Civil Engineering Or should possess a degree or diploma which has a combination of Civil Engineering from a Recognized University or Institute as sub-subjects.
  • (OR)
  • you should possess a degree in other relevant fields as specified on the official website, which includes degree or diploma in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, tools and die, automobile, etc.

Qualifications for a Depot Material Superintendent (DMS)

  • Diploma or a degree in any engineering discipline from a  recognized institute or college or university.

Qualifications Required for a Junior Engineer (IT)

  • You should have a three-year degree or diploma for a recognized institute or college or university with at least “Level B” course of three years for the following:
    • Tech(CS) or
    • Tech(IT) or
    • PGDCA or
    • BSc (Computer Science) or
    • BCA or
    • DOEACC ‘B’ level course of three years duration or equivalent

Qualifications Required for a Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant

  • A B.Sc (Bachelors degree in Science) with Physics & Chemistry, with at least 45% marks.
